When looking for a wood, gas, or pellet burning heater it is hard to discern what are important considerations regarding efficiency, reliability, and cost. Salespeople and store managers tend to push what they have in stock or have the greatest margin selling. I don’t blame them, that is often how a business survives, but I want to know what’s best for you.

How, as a consumer, do you navigate that decision? It helps to start with empirical data from an unbiased source. We have placed some links on this page that will help answer some questions you may have, as well as help you find that appliance that will warm you best.

Most data requires interpretation, so use your common sense. If someone claims a stove heats just as well without a blower, remember your last bowl of soup, did it cool just as fast without blowing on it? There are trade offs in most products you purchase.

Almost all product made by today’s lasting manufacturers are good products. Some basic understanding of thermodynamics can cut through much of the marketing hoopla. A wood stove that has low emission converts more of the wood fuel into heat, but can it transfer that heat to the house? That is the trade off between combustion efficiency and transfer efficiency. A wood stove with great transfer efficiency might not last as long as one with lower, once again a trade-off. A gas fireplace with extremely high efficiency might have all sorts of venting and service related issues because it is so fine tuned, do you want a Ferrari ? or will a Honda do? Are renters using it, will they lose a remote? These are only some questions that will help us lead you to your perfect heating appliance.

Our knowledgeable staff will walk you through the selection process. If we don’t have a model you’re looking for, we’ll refer you to a store that does.
